This is not a disservice to that particular voice, Ellroy has it to a tee and when it’s on form it is like listening to a cross between Raymond Chandler and Biggie Smalls.
Ellroy lives in Los Angeles. Less satisfying than The Black Dahlia but more ambitious, at least narratively — I think my slight disappointment stems from a lack of the emotionalism that was so prominent in Dahlia.
Also features Howard Hughes, Mickey Cohen, bestiality, teamsters, wolverines, necrophilia, heroin, blackmail, and lots of corruption. As a brief aside I also love fiction that contains real people from history and it was hugely enjoyable to research some of the events and identities as I went along.
Homophobia and Commie-fear-mongering are the central features here, and they are intertwined in the central brutal series of crimes. Gangland intrigue and Hollywood sleaze.

desisrto Any review of Ellroy must give a customary nod to his unique style, so heed the notice if you like your sentences with Dickens-esque eloquence. Recommended for those readers who have no faith in humanity and just want to take their car for a spin in the gutter. But perserverance paid off, and it is in the later third desiertp ‘The Big Nowhere’, I was sucked right into the narration and could only marvel at the way Ellroy tied up disparate threads together.
Some better editing might have cleared this up. One of the editorial endorsements on my copy describes this book as ‘insane’ and I couldn’t think of a more accurate word.
The characters were as flawed and intense as ever and continue to be my favorite aspect of James Ellroy’s writing. Quartet, they’re also the best we have, and they have their own damaged–and damaging–kindness. Confidentialand White Jazz —were international best sellers.

Still, it is a novel that if written by any other living crime writer it might be considered their masterpiece and this is only 2nd shelf Ellroy. It’s an idiom so applicable I’m not even going to bother typing it.
